Over the last few years a number of problems of cavity walls has occurred in the UK attributable to the corrosion of metal wall ties, or the none existence of wall ties within buildings. The problems with wall ties have become increasing apparent. The main indications of failure of cavity wall ties as indicated in bulging of walls, cracking of horizontal mortar beds, leakage and occasionally collapse of structures due to the failure of wall ties. In the 19th and early 20th century ties were fabricated from wrought iron and in more recent construction from 1920 onward mild steel ties have been used, which in most cases were not protected and have been inviting corrosion. Until quite recently the only solution was to take down outer skins of wall and rebuild using new galvanised or stainless steel wall ties.
